About Scott Abbott
I received my Ph.D. in German Literature from Princeton University in 1979. Then I taught at Vanderbilt University, BYU, and Utah Valley State College. At Utah Valley University, I directed the Program in Integrated Studies for its initial 13 years and was also Chair of the Department of Humanities and Philosophy for three years. My publications include a book on Freemasonry and the German Novel, two co-authored books with Zarko Radakovic (REPETITIONS and VAMPIRES & A REASONABLE DICTIONARY, published in Serbo-Croatian in Belgrade and in English with Punctum Books), a book with Sam Rushforth (WILD RIDES AND WILDFLOWERS, Torrey House Press), a "fraternal meditation" called IMMORTAL FOR QUITE SOME TIME (University of Utah Press), and translations of three books by Austrian author Peter Handke, of an exhibition catalogue called "The German Army and Genocide," and, with Dan Fairbanks, of Gregor Mendel's important paper on hybridity in peas. More famously, my children are in the process of creating good lives for themselves: as a model and dance/yoga studio manager, as a teacher of Chinese language, as an ecologist and science writer, as a jazz musician, as a parole officer, as a contractor, as a seasonal worker (Alaska and Park City, Utah), and as parents. I share my life with UVU historian Lyn Bennett, with whom I have written a cultural history of barbed wire -- THE PERFECT FENCE (Texas A&M University Press). rather than reifying a metaphor, it is a metaphoration that metastasizes.

Not at all odd in an Amerika where nearly everything – from political disourse (Obama) to manufactured goods – is a REAL simulation!

Simic came out very much on the anti-Milosevisc side of the not that long ago conflicts, see the Virginia Quarterly for that. Whether his animus extended to Handke I don’t know. But he struck me very much of a Made in Amerika Human rights hyena, the NYRB being one of the kennels for that ilk, Bob Silvers kennel keep as I know only too well.

as you know, I think, I sent Peter the Mark Danner piece about the wars in Yugoslavia that he then wove into his play with ferocious denunciation.
still, I love the Review, wouldn’t live without it.
and Simic is, for my taste, a poet I return to again and again.

The one instance where that miserable lowlife whom once friend Bob Silvers used not just to critique Handke’s unusual take on the disintegration of Yugoslavia but to decimate his entire oeuvre, the one shitty Marcus that there has to be in as great a crew as the Marcus one is, is right is when he critiicizes Peter’s “mashup section” of reporter’s and commentors language, and it is the one section that needs upodating if ever the overall great VOYAGE BY DUGOUT (a “model” in the Brechtian sense) is ever done.
